1st weight loss goal has been reached

So starting about this time last year I began my journey of getting back into shape.  It started small, just walking a mile in the morning as I began to get ready for what would be my first of many races.  The walk turned into a walk/jog and then a full out jog.  I then moved to two miles and now I’m running anywhere from 3-4 miles in-between my two days a week at the gym.

So my initial goal was to actually be able to run a complete 5K without walking.  I wasn’t really sure how many races I was going to do after the Mini-Country Music Marathon I was signed up for at the time but I knew it was going to at least a few as I needed to complete a full race without walking (which happened on my third race).  I hadn’t planned on losing a bunch of weight so I didn’t take any pictures of my progress (I’ll need to go through what I have and try and put some time-lapse look-at-me progression type thingy together), but as I was losing weight I decided to set two weight loss goals.

The first goal was to lose 100 pounds.  I see people write about how they did such a thing and I when I would read those stories I always wished that was me, so a 100 pound weight loss was my first goal.  The next goal was to get my BMI out of the obese range.  I started this journey at 348 pounds with a BMI of 47.2.  A non-obese, but still overweight BMI is 29.9 which would put me at 220 pounds.  So the second goal is to reach 220 pounds.  What’s crazy is for me to be at a “normal” weight would be 183 pounds. I think the last time I weighed that little was 5th grade…maybe 6th.

The lightest I can ever recall weighing was 189 pounds my Senior year in High School when I dropped down to that weight for wrestling.  That lasted all of about 4 weeks before I went back up to the Heavyweight weight class (we didn’t have the 220 pound weight class like they do now so I was wrestling people anywhere from 190 to 275 pounds and I was around 215).  I don’t see myself really getting down much below 220.

So as of this morning I reached the first goal of losing 100 pounds!  That’s a lot of extra baggage I’m no longer carrying around.  Next up is that 220 goal, only 28 pounds to go!

Below is a picture taken on December 24, 2012.  If I was any bigger I would have consumed Victoria!  After seeing this picture I knew I needed to make a change, it wasn’t until a few months later when I was on the verge of hitting 350 and was needing to buy 4XL shirts that I started such a change!  Man, what a year makes!  I’m 100 pounds lighter and take more vitamins than medication in the morning.  Praise the Lord!

Nashville Hot Chocolate 15K

hot-chocolate-logoToday I ran in the Nashville Hot Chocolate 15K in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville.  This was my first 15K and the longest run I have ever done.  Last year I ran my first 10K and I approached it all wrong…too fast too early.  This time I went into the race with the goal of an 11 minute per mile pace and was going to just keep it slow and steady.

The weather reports kept changing right up until the day of the race and if the forecast would have stuck with that of rain I would have been worried (initially was cloudy and a high of 46, then chance of rain which turned to snow with a high in the low 30’s and finally cloudy with a high of 23).  I still felt an 11 minute per mile pace would be perfect. I started out at a good pace and at the 1 mile mark my running app informed me I was at a 10 minute 20 sec pace.  This felt good so I stayed with it.

The course was full of small hills and once it hit the Broadway/West End strip of the course, it really got interesting.  When I ran in the Country Music Marathon last year the starting point was at West End Avenue near Centennial park and the course headed towards downtown, this course got on Broadway off of Rosa Park’s Boulevard and went straight down to Centennial Park.  So in the Country Music Marathon it was a just a straight shot down West End to Broadway.  This was a down and back and all I could think about when going down the hills was I was going to need to come back up them after taking a jaunt around Centennial Park…uggh.

I was doing really good keeping a 10:20 to 10:40 pace up until around the 5.5 mile mark.  This was near Park Plaza by Centennial Park and I did not realize it was going all the way down Park Plaza up towards the 28th Street bridge, over it and then back.  I got to mile 7 and from there is was just determination.  I was keeping my pace pretty well but did go over the 11 minute mark during mile 7 – 8.  Going back through those hills on the way back towards Broadway was brutal.

Once I hit mile 8 though I knew it was just over a mile to go and it was here I just felt like my body was on cruise control.  The last half mile was pretty much all down hill so that was nice.  I felt good when I crossed the finish line and was glad that I actually just ran a 15K.  So after completing that, I know that the upcoming half-marathon is going to be 4 miles longer.  That’s another 40 some minutes of running and will definitely be a test of will power.

My official time was 1:39:17.44 and I finished 1055 out of 1834 runners.  Not bad and now I have 20K worth of races already for 2014!

Hill YEAH! 5K

On Saturday I took part in the first annual Hill YEAH! 5K.  This event was put on to support a local charity, Room In The Inn.  This is a great charity that helps the homeless and the fact that the organizers decided to have this in the winter time was perfect.  What a better way to get a feel for living out on the streets than actually running in the streets when it’s cold outside!

The course was definitely full of hills and while I wasn’t expecting a fast time due to the terrain, I actually turned in my best 5K time ever at 29:19.  This is definitely one I will be running again!  Up next is the Nashville Hot Chocolate 15K which is going to be a good run to help me with my mileage as I continue to prepare for the upcoming Nashville 1/2 Marathon which is only a few months away!

The Nashville Striders, a local running club, helped with the race and look to be a good group to get involved with.  I think I’ll be checking them out a bit more and probably signing up to be a member.  I’ve found it’s always better to run in groups and this looks to be a good group of runners from all walks and expertise!
